WORK HISTORY
After graduating from Miami University ("Miami of Ohio" to sports fans) in 1991 with degrees in Philosophy and Psychology, I earned a master's degree and much of a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Memphis. In 1994, I began writing CD reviews for The Memphis Flyer, the local alt-weekly. I eventually became a staffer, writing narrative and investigative features, a column on the local and national media, and an irreverent odds and ends column called "Fly on the Wall." I also contributed to McSweeney's, Salon, SOMA, Gadfly, and Modern Humorist during this time.
In 2000, I moved to New York as the online editor for Advertising Age's Creativity, a monthly advertising trade magazine. In 2002, the magazine acquired AdCritic.com, which I helped relaunch and edited until 2005—during which time the site was nominated for three Webby Awards. I also wrote a thrice-weekly e-mail newsletter about creative advertising and production and reported from the International Advertising Festival in Cannes for Advertising Age for several years.
In 2005, I became a full-time freelance writer, contributing to Radar magazine (where I served as a contributing editor), Advertising Age, Creativity, Print (which earned two National Magazine Awards while I was a contributor), Communication Arts, Slate, the New York Daily News, the New York Post, and other publications. I also served as a freelance online editor for Print and did consulting work, helping to conceive narrative-based promotional campaigns for major consumer brands.
Since 2008, I have been the managing editor of nycgo.com, New York City's official tourism website and the winner of a 2010 People's Voice Webby Award. I manage the day-to-day, as well as other online projects, and inform and execute the site's social media efforts.
